It was a good day for Corvette Racing today with Jan setting a new qualifying lap record around the streets of Long Beach in the No.3 Corvette C7.R with a storming lap of 1:17.939. It is the first pole position for Corvette Racing since the Baltimore street race in 2012 and Magnussen was 0.152 seconds quicker than the rest of the GTLM field.
Tommy, whose turn it was to qualify the No.4, was fourth fastest with a lap of 1:18.489, the two yellow Corvettes sandwiching the two BMWs.
Tommy said afterwards: “It’s awesome to see Jan on pole. It’s always nice for us to get one of those, so congratulations to him. The car was pretty good. It was a little sloppy in places – just my driving. There were some places where I think I could have gone quicker. But it was a good lap. First and fourth is a great place to start the race. Being at the sharp end of the grid is obviously very important and Long Beach. It’s a good start for the race tomorrow.”
The 100-minute dash around the streets of the storied Long Beach track in Southern California begins at 3:10pm (PT) tomorrow.
