After setting a personal best time of 2 hours 54 minutes and 20 seconds in last year’s Virgin London Marathon, Corvette Racing star driver Oliver Gavin not only led the British Racing Drivers Club team of drivers to the finish line but also towards an amazing £100,000 of fund-raising for the CLIC Sargent children’s cancer charity.
The 38-year-old from Northamptonshire was really looking forward to competing again this year, once again for the BRDC team, but a racing commitment means he will be in Long Beach, California the same weekend. So, on the 17th April – the day of the Virgin London Marathon, and the day after Gavin’s American Le Mans Series race – Oliver will run a marathon distance around the streets and coastline of Long Beach in support of his fellow drivers and to raise money for the 2011 charity, Cystic Fibrosis Trust.
“I’m really hoping to twist the arms of Guy Smith and Marino Franchitti, two of my team mates last year who will also be in Long Beach,” said Oliver, “to run a bit of the distance with me but they’re showing some reluctance! I really feel an affinity to this year’s charity as one of my daughter’s best friends suffers from Cystic Fibrosis, and I was determined to do my bit to raise money for the Trust. I’m sad I’ll not be in London for the lunch or to run with all the other guys, but at least I can do my bit while in California.”
To raise awareness of the BRDC Marathon team’s ambitions, as well as money for CFT, a charity lunch has been organised for Friday, 15th April at Carpenters’ Hall, London EC2. Tables are available to buy at a cost of £115 per place, and the afternoon will consist of a champagne reception, 3-course lunch with wine, and the company of a host of top names from British motor sport including Murray Walker and Derek Warwick. Also present will be TV presenter and Cystic Fibrosis Patron, Ben Shephard, who is generously compering for the afternoon. A charity auction will take place with fantastic prizes available. Go to the BRDC website for further information and a booking form.
The BRDC Marathon team consists of Jamie Campbell Walter, Peter Dumbreck, Stuart Hall, Jonny Kane, Robin Liddell, James Matthews, Andy Meyrick and Richard Westbrook plus…from a distance…Oliver Gavin. http://www.justgiving.com/brdc-marathon2011
