Oliver Gavin secured his 7th podium finish at the Le Mans 24 Hours as Corvettes finished 2nd and 3rd in the GT1 class. As expected, it was a great battle between Corvette and Aston Martin for class honours and it was always going to be the car that ran faultlessly that secured the win. This year that was the 009 Aston Martin (Darren Turner, David Brabham and Antonio Garcia) but the two Corvettes fought hard all the way, the 63 finsihing on the same lap as the winner and 64 finishing 2 laps behind.
"It was really tough out there, again we had an epic battle with Aston," Olly confirmed. "Throughout the race we had to fight hard both with the competition and the changing conditions. I was in the middle of my third stint in the early hours of the morning when the rain started. It was wet in some places and dry in others. The luck wasn't with us this year, we lost time with odd niggles so we've got to be pleased with a podium. Olivier and Max drove really well so we have to be pleased. Well done Aston ............. but I'll have another bet with George Howard-Chappell next time, when we've had a bet in the past we always win!!"
Audi turned around the qualifying performance to beat Peugeot to overall victory, Tom Kristensen extending his win record to eight. There were close finishes up and down the field, LMP2 becoming a competition between the two privately run Porsche Spyders, Van Merksteijn taking the win. Risi Competizione won GT2 in their Ferrari 430GT.
