The New England Grand Prix at Lime Rock Park proved to be the race where the luck of the No.4 Compuware Corvette team ran out. After 8 straight American Le Mans Series GT1 wins, Oliver Gavin and Olivier Beretta suffered from a number of incidents that left them back in fourth place in GT1 but retaining their championship lead.
After qualifying in third on the GT1 grid, Olivier's problems began at the start itself! A slow starting prototype car ahead of him baulked him into the first corner and Olivier was forced to back off and he dropped down the field. Some excellent driving saw him catch the thrid placed 009 Aston Martin but there was contact and both cars spun on to the grass.
However, worse was to come. In the esses, a part of the track not ideally suited to overtaking, the No.20 Dyson Lola came up Olivier's inside and unsighted Olivier held his line. The two cars speared towards the barrier and it was the No.4 that came off worst with substantial damage to the front of the car.
He somehow managed to get the car back to the pits and the excellent Corvette Racing team rapidly changed the front of the car. Oliver took over the driving and went back out some 22 laps down on the GT1 leaders. Unfortunately, with the problems the team had getting the damaged car 'behind the wall' there were more mechanics in front of the wall than allowed and Oliver was forced to serve a penalty, dropping the car further behind.
It was then a case of finishing the race and getting some points which the team duly completed.
The final GT1 results were:
Pos./Drivers/Car/Laps
1. Lamy/Sarrazin, Aston Martin DBR9, 166
2. Fellows/O'Connell, Chevrolet Corvette C6.R, 166
3. Enge/Turner, Aston Martin DBR9, 166
4. Gavin/Beretta, Chevrolet Corvette C6.R, 142
