Oliver ended the day second fastest in GT1 driving the No.72 Luc Alphand Aventures Corvette C6.R. There were two hour long free practice sessions during the day. Oliver sat out the morning session as his two team mates, Jerome Policand and Patrice Goueslard learned the Silverstone circuit. In the second afternoon session, Jerome drove the car in the first 30 minutes recording the then fastest GT1 time before handing over to Oliver.
Oliver soon felt comfortable again at the Sliverstone track that he hasn't driven on since 1999 and was recording competitive lap times. His sector times were good but traffic meant he never quite got a clear run in every sector. During the last quarter of the session Oliver found a reasonably clear lap and set his fastest lap at 1m 46.453s. This was the best GT1 time until Antonio Garcia in the Team Modena Aston Martin DBR9 flew round in 1m 45.472s right at the end of the practice.
“It's great to be back here at Silverstone and with Luc Alphand Aventures, picking up from our good weekend at Spa in July. I got to know the team well there.
“We have some issues with the rear of the car today which we are working through now but it's working well with Jerome and Patrice, and we are all thinking along the same lines and saying the same things, which is good. Once we get our problems fixed, we will go a bit faster. It's great to be driving back at Silverstone. It took me a few laps to find my way around but I got it together and we ended up second. Not too bad for my first session in the car but obviously tomorrow we'd like to go one better and be on pole.
“The level of competition is high; the Modena car is very fast, the Saleen seems to be a little off at the moment, but I'm sure they will come good tomorrow. There are some other cars out there which are also snapping at our heels. Traffic is going to be a huge issue. There are a lot of cars on a relatively small track [compared to Le Mans], you feel like you are constantly tripping up or over somebody. That's exactly what happened to me in the second session. I had an LMP2 car try and come round the outside of me in the middle of Becketts and, when I turned in to the last right hander, he'd dived up the inside of me and I was completely unsighted and I ran into the side of him and did a little damage to the right side of our car. This is the third weekend in a row that I've had a P car hit me and things happen in threes so I hope that's it. No more now!”
Tomorrow sees a third free practice at 09.30 followed by qualifying for GT1 and GT2 between 14.10 to 14.30.
