It was good race strategy and tactics that delivered a Corvette 1-2 at Road America. Oliver and Olivier Beretta started from fourth place on the GT1 grid in the No.4 Compuware Corvette C6.R but there was less than half a second covering the two Corvettes and the two Aston Martins. The racing was going to be close!
At the start Darren Turner managed to pass Ron Fellows for second place and that was the way it stayed for a while, two Aston Martins then two Corvettes, all within a few seconds of each other! However, the leading 009 Aston Martin took a trip into the gravel bringing out a full course caution. The cars dived into the pits for fuel and it was Darren Turner in the 007 car who came out ahead of the two Corvettes.
Corvette Racing decided to combat the Aston threat by putting the No.3 and No.4 cars on different fuel strategies, Ron Fellows coming in to hand over to Johnny O'Connell after 1 hour 12 minutes. Oliver stayed out in the No.4 car, waiting until 1 hour 41 minutes to hand over to Olivier. By this time he had managed to pass Darren Turner at turn 14 and was leading the class at the time. The stop put Johnny into the class lead but he needed to make another fuel stop.
During the third full course caution of the race Johnny managed to gain a lap on Olivier and Tomas Enge, now in the 007 Aston Martin. This allowed him to come in and make his final stop and retain the class lead. They crossed the line with Johnny a lap ahead of Olivier and Tomas.
